Which Motherlove supplement is right for me?

More Milk Plus is Motherlove's most popular product, and the best-selling breastfeeding supplement in the US. It contains fenugreek, blessed thistle, nettle, and fennel seed. Fenugreek is the herb most recommended by lactation consultants for increasing breast milk supply; this combination helps most women increase their supply within 24-48 hours. Available in a grain alcohol or alcohol-free liquid extract; and as a liquid extract concentrate in vegetarian capsules. Not for use during pregnancy.

More Milk Special Blend contains the herbs in More Milk Plus blended with goat's rue, an herb that helps to build mammary tissue. Specially-formulated at the request of lactation consultants, this product can help increase breast milk supply for women who have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), did not see an increase in breast size during pregnancy, have had previous breast surgeries, or for adoptive mothers. Available in a grain alcohol or alcohol-free liquid extract and as a liquid extract concentrate in vegetarian capsules. Not for use during pregnancy.

More Milk has blessed thistle, nettle and fennel but does not contain fenugreek for those who may be sensitive to its potential side effects (usually gastric upset that may occur in either mother or baby). Not for use during pregnancy.

More Milk Two contains raspberry leaf, nettle and alfalfa - a nourishing combination of herbs that is specially formulated to safely increase the breast milk supply of pregnant breastfeeding mothers. Alcohol-free and safe for use during pregnancy.

Goat’s Rue This herb helps increase breast milk by stimulating the development of mammary tissue; allowing adoptive mothers to successfully breastfeed, as well as women who have had breast surgery. It is also helpful for women who did not see an increase in their breast size during pregnancy. Available in a grain alcohol base, and as a liquid extract concentrate in vegetarian capsules. Discuss product use with a healthcare professional before using during pregnancy.

Fenugreek This single herb extract is most recommended by lactation consultants to quickly help increase breast milk supply. Available in an alcohol-free liquid extract. Not for use during pregnancy.

It does take longer, usually 2-3 weeks, to see an effect if taking goat's rue to support mammary tissue development.

What is the difference between Motherlove's liquid extracts and Motherlove's capsules?

Initially the herbal components in all our formulas are extracted in grain alcohol and water, resulting in what is commonly known as a tincture. For our alcohol-free extracts the alcohol is then slowly removed without destroying the important herbal constituents. Glycerin, derived from coconuts, is added in place of the alcohol; acting as a natural preservative and giving the tincture a sweeter taste. To make our capsules, we again remove the alcohol and add coconut oil and soy lecithin as a natural preservative. This is then encapsulated in a vegetarian capsule. The liquid extracts and the capsules have the same herbal strength per dose. Liquid extracts are more quickly absorbed through the mucus membranes in the mouth than the capsules, which take about 1/2 hour to digest and enter the system. Many women prefer the capsules due to the strong taste of the liquid extracts.

What is the difference between Motherlove alcohol based extracts and the alcohol-free extracts?

Initially, both products' herbal components are extracted in alcohol and water. An alcohol/water blend is the preferred medium as it extracts the widest range of constituents from the herbs. The amount of alcohol in the finished extract is minimal and is not contraindicated in breastfeeding, but it does have a sharp taste.

In the alcohol-free products, the alcohol is slowly steamed away without removing the important herbal constituents. Glycerin, a syrup derived from coconuts, is then added to replace the alcohol. Motherlove offers alcohol-free choices in the More Milk Plus, More Milk Special Blend, More Milk Two, and Fenugreek products. All capsules are also alcohol-free.

Does the alcohol affect my baby?

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that a small amount of alcohol is compatible with breastfeeding, and that alcohol is out of breast milk within two hours after consumption. Our alcohol-based tinctures contain a very small amount of alcohol, about the equivalent of one glass of wine consumed over a 2- week timeframe. If there is a concern about alcohol content, Motherlove does have alcohol-free liquid extracts and vegetarian capsules available.

How long should I use Motherlove liquid extracts or vegetarian capsules?

Every mother's needs vary. Some women are able to use these products for a short time to increase their breast milk supply. Others, once their supply increases to the desired level, are able to decrease the amount or number of doses per day to maintain the desired supply of breast milk. Many women are able to stop taking the product all together as their bodies are able to maintain an adequate milk supply. Some women may need to use Motherlove's lactation products the entire time they are nursing to maintain their milk supply. We encourage women to use the amount that best meets their baby's growing demands.

What are the advantages of a liquid extract over a dried herbal supplement or tea?

Motherlove liquid extracts are made with only the highest quality certified organic herbs - picked and processed at peak potency. A liquid extract maintains this quality over time and has a high rate of absorbability. Dried powdered herbs can lose potency over time, making them less effective and requiring higher dosage amounts.

What should I do if it is not working?

Be sure you are taking the correct amount for your body weight according to the suggested use on the label. These products may be taken with 1-2 oz. of liquid. Although it is important to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, for maximum effectiveness avoid drinking liquids 15 minutes before or after each dose. Drinking more liquids than specified with each use may dilute the herbs in your system. There are certain herbs (including sage, parsley, and peppermint) and medications (such as over-the-counter decongestants) that can lower milk supply. Try to avoid these while breastfeeding. Some lactation consultants also warn that some anti depressants and hormonal birth control may lower breast milk supply. As there can be many causes of low milk supply, we recommend working with a lactation consultant to help you with your particular breastfeeding situation.

Are these herbs safe?

The herbs in our products are culinary herbs traditionally used throughout the world. They have been used to safely and effectively increase breast milk for generations. Fenugreek and fennel are common in Middle Eastern cuisine. Fenugreek is also used to make imitation maple flavoring. Nettle, called a "storehouse of nutrition," is a wonderful spring green when cooked and is full of valuable minerals such as iron, calcium, and other trace minerals. Blessed thistle is most often recommended to strengthen the liver.

Are there any known side effects from Motherlove products?

Commonly, fenugreek may cause increased perspiration, gas and/or loose stools, and the body may excrete a maple syrup-like smell when taking it alone. Both fenugreek and goat's rue can lower blood sugar levels. Women who are insulin dependent or hypoglycemic may want to consult with a health care provider prior to use. As with any ingested food or product, if adverse effects appear in mother or baby, discontinue use.

Are allergic reactions to Motherlove herbal extracts possible?

Any ingested food has the potential for allergic reaction. Motherlove's liquid extracts do not contain any dairy, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, gluten or soy. The vegetarian capsules do contain non-GMO soy lecithin. Fenugreek and goat's rue are in the legume family, as are soy and peanuts. Those with allergies to plants in this family should use these products with caution. Discontinue use if side effects appear in mother or baby.

Are Motherlove products gluten-free?

Yes, all Motherlove products are gluten-free.

Can Motherlove products be used with other medications?

Our products can be taken along with many other medications. Please call us with any concerns. We keep books on file to research specific contraindications with the herbs we use in our products and other medications. Please consult a health care practitioner with contraindication concerns.

What is a "zero" rating?

All of Motherlove's body care products have been rated zero (zero toxins) by the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Skin Deep Database - the cleanest score a product can receive. EWG has developed an online safety guide for cosmetics and personal care products to help people find safer products. The Skin Deep Database combines product ingredient lists with information in more than 50 standard toxicity and regulatory databases. The database provides easy-to-navigate safety ratings for tens of thousands of personal care products (see: www.ewg.org).

What is the difference between the Pregnant Belly Oil and the Pregnant Belly Salve?

Both of these products help to prevent stretch marks and are made with the same healing herbs. The Pregnant Belly Salve has the addition of shea butter and beeswax, making it a thicker consistency. We find that the salve is more popular, but both are equally effective.

How often should I use the Pregnant Belly Oil or Salve?

We recommend using it in the morning and the evening or anytime your belly feels tight and itchy. Any oil based product can stain your clothing, so let the oil absorb before getting dressed. As your pregnancy progresses, pamper other parts of your body with these products. Hips and breasts can get stretch marks too!

Does the Pregnant Belly Salve or Oil work on existing stretch marks?

Although moisturizing can help stretch marks fade, it is very difficult to get rid of existing stretch marks completely. Use this product to help prevent new marks by keeping your skin supple while you grow.

What is a Sitz Bath?

This is a shallow bath that new moms use with what is known as a sitz bath pan, a basin that fits over your toilet seat. This allows women to sit in healing herbs and warm water after childbirth; helping to soothe sore perineal muscles and ease discomfort.

What is the difference between the Sitz Bath products?

All three of our sitz bath products contain the same healing herbs. Our original Sitz Bath is a combination of loose herbs and sea salt that is steeped and strained before use. We also offer a more convenient Sitz Bath Concentrate, where one ounce of these pre-steeped herbs can be added directly to a half gallon of warm water. We also make a Sitz Bath Spray, which women can spray directly on to their skin, with no need to stop and sit in a bath. Perfect for frequent use!

Does Motherlove's Nipple Cream need to be removed prior to breastfeeding?

Our Nipple Cream is 100% Certified USDA Organic. All the ingredients are safe for ingestion and does not need to be washed off prior to breastfeeding.

What about the beeswax?

Beeswax is not the same as honey, and unlike honey, it is safe for ingestion in infants under 1 year. Motherlove's Nipple Cream is heated to over 175 degrees when being manufactured, which eliminates the possibility of botulism.

Why no lanolin?

Lanolin is a natural wax coating on sheep wool that is removed by boiling the wool and collecting the wax. Sheep may often be treated with a pesticide dip which contains chemicals such as DDT, lindane, and diazinon to control parasites. Because we are dedicated to avoiding toxins in products made for women and their babies, we have chosen not use this ingredient in our products.

What is thrush?

Thrush is a yeast infection that grows in moist places, such as in the folds of a baby's skin. It appears as red, irritated patches on the neck, armpits, and thighs; and as white patches on the tongue and insides of the cheeks. It can also appear as a diaper rash that is difficult to clear. When thrush spreads to a nursing mother's milk ducts, it can make nursing painful. The nipples are red, itchy, cracked, and sometimes have white patches. We use Oregon Grape Root and Myrrh in our Diaper Rash & Thrush salve; as both are antibacterial, antifungal, and very effective on a yeast caused diaper rash. Although it is safe to use on nursing nipples, we do not recommend putting it directly into your baby's mouth.

Is the Diaper Rash & Thrush safe to use with cloth diapers?

Yes! Diaper Rash & Thrush does not contain zinc oxide, a common ingredient in diaper rash creams. This white substance creates a moisture barrier that can cause cloth diapers to not be as absorbent. Diaper Rash & Thrush is cloth diaper-safe.
