Elder is a shrub or small tree with ovate,
serrated leaves in paired leaflets with a single leaf at its
tip. In the spring, it produces dense, flat umbels of sweet
perfumed, cream-colored blossoms. A tea or tincture of these
blossoms open up the sweat glands to promote sweating or break
a fever during a cold or the flu. The blossoms soften skin and
are often used in body care for face washes and steams, baths,
and skin oils. As a compress, the blossoms reduce swelling and
inflammation. In the late summer, Elder produces dark purple-black
berries that are used in jams, jellies, and elderberry wine.
