The Nurturing Life Foundation will be providing scholarships to the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BPC) Program, a La Leche League International (LLLI) program.

The BPC program assists low income mothers nationwide in developing support systems to provide ongoing breastfeeding training and information. The program is unique in that low income women are trained as peer counselors who then can become paid trainers to continue teaching and empowering other women in their communities. Many of the women go on to earn medical degrees and training. Today six states, the District of Columbia and 24 countries have successful LLLI BPC programs in place.

"Breastfeeding is a natural safety net against the worst effects of poverty," says James P. Grant, former executive director for UNICEF. The benefits of breastfeeding have long been recognized as a major contributor of the overall health of both mother and baby. Lactation consultants, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization and many other experts encourage women to breastfeed for one year or longer. "We've seen that minority and low income women tend to have the lowest breastfeeding rates, yet the mothers and the babies need the health benefits the most," says Kathy Baker, BPC program director. This August, in partnership with La Leche League International, Motherlove is a gold-level sponsor in the 2005 LLLUSA World Breastfeeding Week. The event promotes awareness on the benefits of breastfeeding and provides education and training.
