Every day is Earth Day at Motherlove!

April in Colorado always brings a softening to the earth, a renewal of life, and the first smattering of buds and green leaves on plants and trees. It is a month where many activities are planned for Earth Day celebrations throughout the country; and for us here at Motherlove, it is a busy time for renewing work on our farm and for welcoming all the new animal babies coming into our various folds.

Every year around this time we typically pause to post a story about Earth Day, but in reality, every day is Earth Day at Motherlove. The past few years, we’ve talked about our many efforts to be as sustainable a company as we can be, and this past year has been a real banner year for achieving some real milestones in our efforts. What did we do? Read on!

For years we manufactured using wind credits, but had always dreamed of actually generating renewable energy. This year saw the completion of our new solar panel installation developed by Bella Energy and installed by Golden Solar. Our 75.6 kW system consists of 252 panels on the roof of our new facility, with an estimated production of 90,000 kWh per year. The power we are now generating is about three times more than we use as a company, and the excess is now being fed back into the grid.

Our hometown City of Fort Collins' ClimateWise program is a voluntary initiative helping local businesses reduce greenhouse gas emissions by promoting waste reduction, energy savings, alternative transportation, and water conservation. Our entire staff works every day to recycle and compost our waste as much as we can. Many of us also bike or carpool to work to reduce our carbon footprint. This year, Motherlove went from Silver to Platinum status in the program, and we are proud to say that we are diverting 98.5 percent of our waste out of the local landfill!

Probably the biggest feather in our cap is our new B Corp certification. The B Corporation designation is awarded to companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems and meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. B Corps are important because they inspire all businesses to compete not only to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world.  There are over 1,300 Certified B Corporations from more than 120 industries in 41 countries with one unifying goal – to redefine success in business.

Since our earliest days over 25 years ago, when Kathryn Higgins started Motherlove in the kitchen of her family home, the notion of being a good daily steward of the Earth has been the “why” behind everything we do. That and bringing you, our customers, the cleanest, safest, most effective products we can to help you on your journey of motherhood. These are values that run deep at Motherlove, resulting in a celebration of the Earth every single day of the year.
