Labels Matter - Why Just Label It's campaign to label GMOs clearly is so important

You’ve probably heard quite a bit about GMOs in the news lately. We asked Bridget Montesanti, Organic Trade Association’sCommunications and Government Policy Project Coordinator, to explain why the Just Label It campaign is important, and how to participate.

Most developed countries, including Japan, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, China and the 15 nations of the European Union, have mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods. However, this is not the case in the United States, in spite of the fact that 93 percent of Americans agree that GE foods should be labeled.

That is why, in late September 2011, the Center for Food Safety filed a legal petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), calling on FDA to label GE foods. Meanwhile, Organic Voices—started when a group of organic stakeholders met in D.C. to discuss the contamination threat to organic farming posed by GE crops—initiated the Just Label It Campaign.

Since then, the “Just Label it: We Have A Right to Know” (JLI) campaign has joined efforts with hundreds of organizations representing the millions of Americans who want their food labeled. It was created on the premise that people have a right to know what is in their food, and to give consumers not only a voice, but a choice in how they can take action.

Since the JLI campaign began, over 600,000 comments have been sent to FDA in support of labeling genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Two videos—“Dining In The Dark” and “Just Label it: We have a right to know”—have also been released to educate people about the issues surrounding GMOs and the need for GE food to be labeled.
