Looking back on a big year at Motherlove!

As we near the year's end, we can't help but reflect on how eventful 2014 has been for Motherlove.

We thought we'd recap some of the most exciting developments for us in the past year, and extend our warm wishes for a happy 2015!

Here are some of the events which have made this year special for us:

- We moved into our new facility in Fort Collins.   While it was a bittersweet move from Laporte, Colorado, a one-stoplight town so close to our family home, we were thrilled to move into our new facility in Fort Collins this year.   After 18 years and many additions it was clear that we needed more space to house the current and future needs of Motherlove. In our new space we have a full-sized warehouse, more office space, and new production equipment.  This space will allow us to store enough materials to meet our needs, take advantage of more efficient equipment, and prepare larger batches of our products.  We even have the luxury of space to grow into!  Of course we're maintaining our commitment to the environment in our new facility.  We carefully examined our energy usage, and made a number of changes to improve our energy efficiency, including installing new LED lighting.  We are also starting to work on a solar installation on the roof of the facility which will more than offset our total energy use.  As we make this leap into a bigger space, we remain mindful of the importance of staying true to our roots as a family company.  Kathryn and her family still own and operate Motherlove, and we still work by hand, blending the herbs and pressing the oils in our products.

- We launched our new website.  In July we launched our new website, which we think has made learning about Motherlove products a simpler and more beautiful experience.  Among other changes, our new site allows you to quickly see the difference between our breastfeeding supplements, helps you decide which supplement is right for your needs, has an expanded store locator, presents more information about Kathryn Higgins and the Motherlove story, our farm, the herbs used in our products, and our Nurturing Life Foundation.  We hope you've enjoyed exploring our new website!

- We had a wonderfully productive year on our organic farm.  It’s a dream come true to have a farm and education center to supply us with local, sustainable, certified organic herbs for Motherlove products, where we can grow organic produce and share our knowledge of herbs. We had an exciting year on our 120 acres on the Front Range!  We grew and harvested calendula, an herb included in most of our body care items, such as our Pregnant Belly SalveGreen SalveNipple Cream, and Diaper Rash and Thrush salve. We also grew blessed thistle, an herb we use to make many of our breastfeeding supplements, such as More Milk Plus and More Milk Special Blend.  We grew sweet corn that was sold to local grocery stores. The corn and rye we grew will be made into whiskey by a local distillery. The hay and corn is for our animals for the winter.  We built a new 1500 square foot greenhouse for starting herbs and vegetables.  We grew sunflowers that will be harvested for animal feed, and we will

begin experiments in pressing the seed for oil. Our goal is to someday make our own biodiesel to power both of our tractors on the farm.  Motherlove employees spent a day on the farm harvesting organic sweet corn to donate to the Larimer and Weld County food banks. We donated over 3,000 lbs of corn to feed 800 families in the area. We capped off the wonderfully successful season with a big harvest fest to give thanks to our employees, friends and families. Then we all pitched in with pumpkin picking. The pumpkins were donated to the food bank, as well.

- We began our ClimateWise journey.  When we moved to Fort Collins this year we jumped at the chance to participate in the City of Fort Collins' ClimateWise program.  ClimateWise is a voluntary program helping local businesses reduce greenhouse gas emissions by promoting waste reduction, energy savings, alternative transportation, and water conservation - all things central to Motherlove's goal of becoming a truly sustainable company.  In the coming months ClimateWise will conduct an assessment of Motherlove's energy use, trash/recycling, water use, and employee transportation to work.  We expect to have a waste stream assessment, which will involve a close look at our waste and identify areas for improvement.  ClimateWise awards business levels of bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. These levels represent progress the companies make to reduce their footprint. In our first year we hope to achieve silver status, and of course we will work hard to achieve platinum status!

As you can see, it's been an exciting and eventful year here at Motherlove!  We look forward to seeing what 2015 will bring. We extend our warmest wishes to you and your families for the new year!
