Your Breast Milk and Motherlove Breastfeeding Supplements
Breast milk is the most complete food for babies, containing the perfect balance of nutrients that are essential for a baby’s growth and development. Many experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), recommend that women breastfeed exclusively for six months and continue breastfeeding alongside complementary foods until the baby is two years or older.
Decades of research have shown that breast milk is a unique substance that cannot be duplicated artificially. It contains more than 100 nutritional components not found in infant formula that are critical to a baby’s brain function, and to their visual and auditory development. Breastfed babies have lower incidences of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and receive antibodies to the many diseases to which their mothers have been exposed, helping to develop a strong immune system. Breast milk also provides protection against many illnesses and infections, and lowers the risk of obesity both in childhood and adolescence.
For nursing women, breastfeeding provides a wide range of benefits including lowering the risk of developing ovarian and breast cancers, as well as Type 2 Diabetes. It helps mothers return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster than women who formula feed, and makes a woman’s bones stronger, thereby reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Breastfeeding is also convenient, as you can feed your baby anywhere and at any time, without having to pack up bottles, sterilizing equipment, and formula.
Ultimately, the decision to breastfeed is yours. Motherlove believes new mothers should have access to information about the immediate and lifelong benefits breastfeeding can provide both to you and your baby; and we are dedicated to helping women with low milk supply provide the best start for their babies*.
If you are struggling with your milk supply, or are just wanting to increase your freezer stash, Motherlove has 8 lactation supplements that can help you. Our supplements are available in a liquid tincture or a liquid capsule, which are the most potent ways to take an herb. We source only USDA Certified Organic herbs, and our products are manufactured in an FDA registered and GMP certified facilty.
Below is a list of our supplements, the herbs they contain, and some of the reasons why we recommend that particular product. However, if you still have questions about which product is right for you, Motherlove has three Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) on staff who can help you decide which one is best for your unique circumstances.
More Milk Plus (fenugreek seed, blessed thistle, nettle leaf, fennel seed): Motherlove’s best-selling herbal lactation blend supporting breast milk supply for nursing mothers. We often recommend this product for moms who begin nursing successfully, and are now looking for a boost. This is a great product if you are heading back to work, if you are recently recovering from an illness, or are just looking to boost your supply. Available in a liquid capsule, liquid tincture, and an alcohol-free tincture.
More Milk Special Blend (goat's rue, fenugreek seed, blessed thistle, nettle leaf, fennel seed): Goat's rue in particular helps develop mammary tissue and all 5 herbs are galactagogues. We typically recommend this product for women with hormonal imbalances, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), women who have had past breast surgeries, women who did not see an increase in their cup size during pregnancy, and adoptive moms who want to nurse. Available in a liquid capsule, liquid tincture, and an alcohol-free tincture.
Goat's Rue (goat's rue): Supports the development of mammary tissue. Much like More Milk Special Blend, we recommend this product for women with hormonal imbalances, women who have had past breast surgeries, women who did not see an increase in their cup size during pregnancy, and adoptive moms who want to nurse. Rather than take More Milk Special Blend, some women take this product on its own or in conjunction with a product such as More Milk, Malunggay, or Shatavari. Available in a liquid capsule and liquid tincture.
Malunggay (Moringa) (malunggay leaf): Known as the “miracle tree,” malunggay, also known as moringa, is widely recognized for its nutritional benefits, and has been used for generations by breastfeeding women to support breast milk supply. This is a great choice for women who want to boost their milk supply and get added nutritional benefits, such as additional iron, protein, Vitamin C, and calcium. Many women find success combining this product with More Milk or Goat's Rue. Available in a liquid capsule.
More Milk (blessed thistle, nettle leaf, fennel seed): The same herbs as our best-selling More Milk Plus, but formulated without fenugreek for those who may be sensitive to this herb. We often hear successful stories of moms taking this supplement on its own, or in conjunction with Malunggay or Shatavari. Available in a liquid tincture.
Shatavari (shatavari root): A rejuvenating Ayurvedic herb that helps balances the female hormonal system. Shatavari is used worldwide during menstruation, infertility, nursing, and menopause. Motherlove formulates this supplement to support lactation and we often recommend it to women with hormonal imbalances who wish to avoid fenugreek. Available in a liquid capsule and liquid tincture.
Fenugreek (fenugreek seed): A liquid extract of the most recommended herb to support breast milk supply. Available in an alcohol-free tincture.
More Milk Two (raspberry leaf, nettle leaf, alfalfa leaf): For use when pregnant and breastfeeding an older child, or for support during tandem breastfeeding. Available in an alcohol-free tincture.
This is just a quick overview of our lactation supplements. We also created this useful guide that will help you choose the best supplement for your breastfeeding situation.
