Witch hazel

Hamamelis virginiana

Witch hazel is a popular herb used mostly for topical treatments. As a result of its  astringent effects on the skin, witch hazel can be used on acne, rashes, and for hemorrhoid treatment. The herb can also be used to help stop bleeding and limit scarring, but more human research is still necessary to learn more about  witch hazel’s healing abilities.

Why You Might Find it Helpful:  Witch hazel has often been used to provide relief for hemorrhoid discomfort. Though research is limited, witch hazel is believed to be a powerful anti-inflammatory to help reduce painful hemorrhoid symptoms.

Witch hazel’s leaf and bark contain astringent tannins, which is what gives the herb its anti-inflammatory properties. Due to this, witch hazel leaves and bark are harvested to create a wide range of pain-reducing products, such as creams and medications. Motherlove strategically uses this plant in both our Rhoid Balm (for hemorrhoids) and in our Sitz Bath Spray (for soothing the postpartum body).

What It Looks Like:  Witch hazel is a shrub that grows in the rich soils of the east coast of the United States. During the fall, witch hazel’s star-shaped leaves give off brilliant colors, ranging from yellow to red. When witch hazel blooms, it produces round fruits armed with projections. These projections are used to shoot out seeds around the plant in order to spread its growth.

Things to Know: Motherlove uses witch hazel for topical, skin-soothing products. Though witch hazel has been safely used as an herbal treatment, allergic reactions may be possible.
