Lavender | Lavandula officinalis and Lavandula Austafolia
Herbal medicine has a long history with lavender, both for aromatherapy and skincare. Not only is lavender one of the most common scents utilized for stress reduction, it is also one of the most studied essential oils used in aromatherapy. Motherlove uses lavender in our products to not only provide a soothing and pampering aroma for to-be moms, but we also use the plant’s blossoms to help soothe skin.
Why You Might Find it Helpful: Lavender can be used for its aromatherapy benefits, specifically, increasing the amount of serotonin in your brain. With the ability to relieve stress and depression, moms may find lavender oil beneficial. The fragrant herb is also a popular ingredient to help relieve headaches, exhaustion, and promote relaxation. Motherlove’s Pregnant Belly Oil, Pregnant Belly Salve, and Birth & Baby Oil are all infused with a gentle touch of lavender to provide a gentle, calming scent.
Due to lavender’s antiseptic qualities, it can be a great antibacterial ingredient for face washes, steams, and facial toners. Lavender’s antibacterial and antifungal properties can be utilized to ease dry, itchy, or inflamed skin. It is for this reason Motherlove uses lavender as a key ingredient in our Pregnant Belly product line and our Birth & Baby Oil.
What It Looks Like: Lavender is a perennial plant, in that it can continue to grow, year after year. Typically, lavender grows up to two feet tall and has many branches of gray-green linear leaves. The very aromatic purple flowers, which grow on terminal spikes, are gathered just before opening.
Things to Know: Motherlove’s Birth & Baby Oil, Pregnant Belly Oil, and Pregnant Belly Salve have a light lavender scent. These products are delicately scented to provide comfort to both mother and child, without overstimulating the senses.
