Why isn't my Supplement Working to Support my Milk Supply?

Why isn't my Supplement Working to Support my Milk Supply?

“I am taking my supplement, but I don’t see any changes.”

Just as every mother isn’t the same, the effects of breastfeeding supplements are not alike. There is no clean-cut supplement that works for every single mom out there. But, there are different supplements that can help provide support for moms with specific breastfeeding needs.

Be sure to check the following:

Dosing - How much of the supplement/tincture are you taking, & how often?

Issues with dosing are one of the most common reasons why moms think their supplement is not working for them. When it comes to dosing, it is important to take the recommended dose:

Liquid Extracts:
Take 1 ml, 4-6 times throughout the day or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner.

Capsules:
Take 1 capsule, 4 to 6 times throughout the day or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner.

Realistic Expectations - How much support should you expect from your supplement?

It is important to be mindful of your expectations when it comes to taking herbal supplements. Though breastfeeding supplements have shown to be useful for nursing mothers, their effects are not instant. It is recommended to wait to see the effects of your supplement at least 3-7 days after ingesting it. Please note that the exception is the herb goat's rue, which is known to help build mammary tissue and therefore is slower acting than moringa or fenugreek.

It is also important to have realistic expectations about how much milk a supplement may help you produce. Herbs, while used for generations, cannot fix underlying issues of low milk supply. Work with your Lactation Consultant if you have a perceived low milk supply. There are many common scenarios that could be causing a dip in supply.

Ensure you are taking the correct supplement for your breastfeeding journey. View our supplement guide to see the following categories:

  • Optimize milk supply
  • Didn't see increase in breast size during pregnancy
  • Fenugreek-free options
  • Period returned
  • Delivered prematurely
  • Adoptive feeding or relactating
  • Pregnant & breastfeeding
Frequency of Breastfeeding - How often are you breastfeeding/pumping a day?

The frequency of breastfeeding can also alter the amount of your supply - it is a supply and demand process for your body. The more you put baby/pump to breast, the more your body is reminded you want to make more milk

We often suggest adding in another pumping or nursing session, or trying power pumping - a common way to tell your body you want to increase your breast milk supply.

Extend Your Trial - How long have you been taking your supplement/tincture?

It is easy to take a supplement for 1-2 days and get frustrated that the effects are not instant. We can all relate to that when going through the stress of being a new mom and feeding your child. For moms taking herbal breastfeeding supplements, we recommend giving your trial at least 3-7 days to see the support you are looking for.
