Tinctures vs. capsules? Liquid vs. dried herbs? Common questions about our milk supply products.
October 09, 2018
Every day, Motherlove staff members answer questions about our products on the phone, via email, and on social media. We are happy to be of service to the moms who use our products! But, to make things even easier, here are some responses to questions we often receive.
What is the difference between Motherlove’s liquid extracts and Motherlove’s capsules?
Initially the herbal components in all our formulas are extracted in grain alcohol and water, resulting in what is commonly known as a tincture. To make our capsules, we remove the alcohol and add non-GMO soy lecithin, which helps stabilize the product. This thick liquid is then encapsulated in a vegetarian capsule, derived from soy, corn, and coconut. The liquid extracts and the capsules have the same herbal strength per dose. Both the tincture and the capsules get into your system quickly, but the capsules take about 20-30 minutes to digest, whereas the tincture is more quickly absored by the mucus membranes in your mouth. In the end, the main difference is the taste. Due to the high concentration of herbs in our tinctures, and the alcohol base, the tincture is very strong tasting. If you are sensitive to taste, or have never tried a tincture before, we recommend the capsules!
What are the advantages of a liquid extract over a dried herbal supplement or tea?
Motherlove liquid extracts are made with only the highest quality USDA Certified Organic herbs - picked and processed at peak potency. A liquid extract maintains this quality over time and has a high rate of absorbability. Dried powdered herbs can lose potency over time, making them less effective and requiring higher dosage amounts.
What is the difference between Motherlove alcohol based extracts and the alcohol-free extracts?
Initially, both products’ herbal components are extracted in alcohol and water. An alcohol/water blend is the preferred medium as it extracts the widest range of constituents from the herbs. The amount of alcohol per dose is very low, equivalent to drinking one glass of wine over the course of two weeks.
In the alcohol-free products, the alcohol is slowly steamed away without removing the important herbal constituents. Glycerin, a syrup derived soy, maize, and mustard, is then added to replace the alcohol. Motherlove offers alcohol-free choices in the More Milk Plus, More Milk Special Blend, More Milk Two, and Fenugreek products. All capsules are also alcohol-free.
