Potassium hydroxide, otherwise known as lye, is a common ingredient in soapmaking. It is most often used when a soft or liquid soap is desired. During the soapmaking process, potassium hydroxide is mixed with fats, oils, and other ingredients, and allowed to react (saponify) to produce the soap. During the saponification process all of the potassium hydroxide is consumed and none remains in the finished soap.
As a B Corp and a business focused on environmental priorities, we try very hard to reduce our contribution of plastic into the waste stream and many of our products are packaged in glass. We were unable to package our liquid soaps in glass, as we felt it was a risk of breaking in a bathtub and saw plastic as our only option for this particular product. We have partnered with Clean Hub to ensure that every ounce of plastic we produce is offset in the waste stream through funding plastic collection.
