Breastfeeding Supplement Questions

Which Motherlove supplement is right for me?

Motherlove offers 8 unique single herb and blended herb varieties to support lactation. A combination formula, such as More Milk Plus or More Milk Special Blend, tend to work best for most women, but we do offer single herb extracts as well.

More Milk Plus is Motherlove’s most popular breastfeeding supplement. It contains fenugreekblessed thistlenettle, and fennel. These herbs are thought to be quite fast-acting and many women notice a difference in 24-72 hours. Available in a traditional alcohol-based tincture, an alcohol-free tincture, and as a liquid vegan capsule. Not for use during pregnancy.

More Milk Special Blend contains the herbs in More Milk Plus blended with Goat’s Rue, an herb that helps support mammary tissue development. Specially formulated at the request of lactation consultants, this product can help support lactation for women who have hormonal imbalances, women who did not see an increase in their cup size during pregnancy, women who have had previous breast surgeries, or for adoptive mothers. Available in a traditional alcohol-based tincture, an alcohol-free tincture, and as a liquid vegan capsule. Not for use during pregnancy.

More Milk has blessed thistlenettle and fennel but does not contain fenugreek for those who may be looking for a fenugreek-free product. Not for use during pregnancy.

Malunggay is known as the “miracle tree” and this single herb extract is widely recognized for its nutritional benefits and lactation support. It has been used for generations by breastfeeding women to help support breast milk production.

Goat’s Rue is an herb known to support lactation and is thought to help develop mammary tissue. It is helpful for women who did not see an increase in cup size during pregnancy, women who have hormonal imbalances, women who have had past breast surgeries and adoptive mothers. Available in a traditional alcohol-based tincture, and as a liquid vegan capsule. Discuss product use with a healthcare professional before using during pregnancy.

Shatavari is a rejuvenating Ayurvedic single herb extract that helps support lactation and helps to balance the female hormonal system. Known for its phytoestrogen properties, this herb can help with a variety of issues including menopause, increased fertility, and breast milk production.

Fenugreek is widely-recommended by lactation consultants to help support breast milk supply. Available in an alcohol-free liquid extract. Not for use during pregnancy.

More Milk Two contains raspberry leafnettle, and alfalfa - a nourishing combination of herbs that is specially formulated to safely support lactation for pregnant breastfeeding mothers. Alcohol-free and safe for use during pregnancy.

What is the recommended dosing on your supplements?

We recommend taking Motherlove's supplements according to the dosage guidelines, which are printed directly on the labels and are as follows:

Liquid Extracts:
175 lbs and under: 1 ml 4 times per day
Over 175 lbs: 2 mls 3 times per day

Capsules:
175 lbs and under: 1 capsule 4 times per day
Over 175 lbs: 2 capsules 3 times per day

Since herbs move quickly through your system, we recommend spacing out the doses to the best of your ability.

What are the advantages of a liquid tincture or liquid capsule?

Motherlove is unique in that we only produce liquid supplements -- both in tincture form and in vegetarian capsules. In contrast to herbal teas or dried herbal tablets, a liquid tincture is the most potent way to take an herb. Often times when manufacturing teas or dried herbal tablets, herbs are ground and remain on the shelves for longer amounts of time, thus losing their potency. By extracting our herbs in a mixture of grain alcohol and water, we are able to pull out larger amounts of the herbal constituents so our customers can take less of the herb but get the same results. Our tinctures and capsules also have a five-year shelf life, which means they can maintain their high potency for many years.

What is the difference between Motherlove’s liquid tinctures and liquid capsules?

Initially the herbal components in all our formulas are extracted in grain alcohol and water, resulting in what is commonly known as a tincture. For our alcohol-free extracts, the alcohol is then slowly removed without destroying the important herbal constituents. Organic vegetable glycerin is added in place of the alcohol, which acts as a natural preservative and gives the tincture a sweeter taste.

To make our liquid capsules, we start with the initial traditional tincture and remove the alcohol and add non-GMO soy lecithin, modified vegetable cellulose, and medium chain triglycerides as a natural preservative. This is then encapsulated in a vegan capsule.

The liquid extracts and the capsules have the same herbal strength per dose. Liquid extracts are more quickly absorbed through the mucus membranes in the mouth than the capsules, which take about 1/2 hour to digest and enter the system. Many women prefer the capsules due to the strong taste of the liquid extracts.

How long should I use your supplements?

Every mother is different so there isn't an easy answer for this question. We know many mothers who have taken our supplements the entire time they breastfeed, but we also know many women who have successfully weaned themselves off of the products. Both of these are perfectly fine. If you'd like to stop taking the product, we always recommend that you wean yourself off slowly and watch for any changes. For example, if you are taking 3 doses per day and have an adequate milk supply, remove 1 dose per day. Continue taking just 2 doses per day and keep an eye on your supply. If it is still adequate, remove another dose and watch for a couple of days. If your milk supply stays at a good level, then you can safely stop taking the product. However, if you remove a dose and see a dip in your supply, we recommend adding the dose back in and staying at that level. If you stop taking your doses all at once, there is a risk that your supply will drop suddenly and it is more difficult to increase it again after that.

How do you know the herbs in your products are safe?

One of Motherlove's 3 guiding principles, or pillars as we call them, is 'Safe and Effective'. We take great strides to ensure that we are providing only the safest ingredients to our consumers. Motherlove uses a number of sources to confirm the safety level of our herbs, including the American Herbal Products Association's Botanical Safety Handbook and the German E. Commission Monographs. In addition to that, we only source USDA Certified Organic or wildcrafted herbs. We have a full-time Quality Assurance Department based in our Fort Collins, Colorado facility that is fully dedicated to monitoring our herbal quality. If you have further questions about our products, simply give us a call or email us.

Typically, how long do the supplements last?

Depending on your body weight, our 2 ounce tinctures and 60-count capsules typically last between 10-14 days. The 4 ounce tinctures and 120-count capsules usually last about 20-28 days.

What should I do if my supplement isn’t working?

Please be sure you are taking the correct amount for your body weight according to the suggested use on the label. We also recommend trying to space out your doses throughout the day as this helps maintain a consistent level of the herbs in your system.

We also offer a full line of breastfeeding supplements, so make sure you are taking the correct one for your particular situation. If you have further questions, please feel free to reach out to us by phone, email, or social media.

As always, there can be many causes of low milk supply so we recommend working with an IBCLC if you continue to have breastfeeding difficulties.

Are Motherlove products non-GMO?

Yes, our products are made with USDA Certified Organic ingredients. Organic standards prohibit the use of GMO's, as well as toxic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, nuclear irradiation, and animal drugs.

Why is there alcohol in some of your tinctures and will it transfer into my breast milk?

Motherlove chooses to use alcohol to extract all of the herbs in our lactation supplements. Alcohol is known to be extremely effective in removing the herbal constituents so that our products are very potent. Alcohol also serves as a preservative. Our alcohol-based tinctures contain a very small amount of alcohol per dose. We liken the alcohol content to drinking one glass of wine over the course of 2 weeks. When taken according to the directions on the label, there is no evidence that this small of amount of alcohol (approximately 15 drops of alcohol per dose) will get into your breastmilk. However, if you have concerns about the alcohol content, Motherlove does have alcohol-free tinctures and vegetarian liquid capsules for many of our supplements.

Is the alcohol-based tincture intended to work better than the alcohol-free tincture?

All of our liquid supplements start by extracting the herbal constituents in a blend of grain alcohol and water. Our traditional tinctures remain with a base of alcohol but we also provide alcohol-free versions of some of our tinctures. The alcohol-free version is made by slowly steaming off the alcohol and replacing it with vegetable glycerin. The herbal components of both products are identical and they work and are absorbed in the same manner and time.

What is that dark residue in my dropper?

That “gunk” is a completely normal residue resulting from herbal sediment. Because Motherlove products contain actual herb plant particles, this characteristic is typical of herbal liquid extracts and in no way compromises the quality of the product. Sediment often collects inside and around the dropper and shaking the bottle prior to use can help release some of the particles. The dark color is from the herbs in each product and can vary in color from a green, to a very dark brown or black. Read more about this on our blog

Is there a product that will help me relactate?

Many women have had success with relactation after using More Milk Special Blend. More Milk Special Blend is a blend of goat's rue, fenugreek, blessed thistle, nettle, and fennel. Goat's rue in particular helps build mammary tissue and all of the herbs in this blend are known herbal galactagogues, or herbs that support lactation. As always, milk is made on a supply and demand basis so it is important to continue to pump or nurse frequently and have adequate nipple stimulation. Women often find that working with an IBCLC can be a helpful resource when trying to reestablish milk supply.

What supplements should an adoptive mom take who wants to breastfeed?

Motherlove typically recommends that the adoptive mom begin taking the full dose of Goat's Rue approximately two to three months before the baby's arrival date, if possible. Along with starting Goat's Rue, it is very important for the mom to begin a pumping regimen and do sufficient nipple stimulation to mimic the normal feeding pattern of an infant. Once the baby arrives, we typically recommend that the mom change to More Milk Special Blend and continue with frequent pumping/nursing sessions. Feel free to call or email us with more specific questions about which supplements to take.

As always, please seek the advice of a physician or IBCLC with any questions regarding a medical condition or treatment.

What do I do if I want to stop taking your supplements?

If you'd like to stop taking the product, we always recommend that you wean yourself off slowly and watch for any changes. For example, if you are taking 3 doses per day and have an adequate milk supply, remove 1 dose per day. Continue taking just 2 doses per day and keep an eye on your supply. If it is still adequate, remove another dose and watch for a couple of days. If your milk supply stays at a good level, then you can safely stop taking the product. However, if you remove a dose and see a dip in your supply, we recommend adding the dose back in and staying at that level. If you stop taking your doses all at once, there is a risk that your supply will drop suddenly and it can be difficult to increase it again after that.

I am sensitive to taste, can I add my tincture to a little bit of food?

Yes, if you are sensitive to taste, you can add the tinctures to a bit of food, such as oatmeal or a smoothie. If you prefer, we also sell a number of our supplements in an alcohol-free version, which is often times sweeter in taste, or in a liquid capsule.

Can you tell me the amount of each herb in the products?

The specific ratio of each herb in our blended supplements is proprietary information, however, we can tell you that each capsule or milliliter of a tincture contains the equivalent of 333 milligrams of dried herbs. Keep in mind, since our supplements are all liquid based, they are more potent than the dried herb capsule equivalent. Each of the herbs, as well as the inactive ingredients, are listed on our website and the product labels.

What kind of product testing is done on your supplements?

All of the herbs used in our supplements are USDA Certified Organic and free of pesticides. The individual herbs are tested for identity using tests such as macroscopic, microscopic, and organoleptic and additionally, they go through a physical analysis for particle size, foreign organic and inorganic matter. Each batch of supplements is manufactured according to established specifications for identity, purity, strength, and composition. Chemical analyses are performed such as heavy metal testing, moisture content, and pesticides. All of our supplements products go through microbiological testing and each batch is signed off on by our Quality Assurance Department before leaving our facility.

Body Care Questions

Why isn’t there lanolin in Nipple Cream?

Lanolin is a natural wax coating on sheep wool that is removed by boiling the wool and collecting the wax. Sheep may often be treated with a pesticide dip which contains chemicals such as DDT, lindane, and diazinon to control parasites. Because we are dedicated to avoiding toxins in products made for women and their babies, we have chosen not use this ingredient in our products.

Why do I have persistent nipple pain?

Nipple pain while breastfeeding can often be caused by an improper latch so we will always recommend seeing an IBCLC if you have persistent nipple pain. In the meantime, Motherlove's Nipple Cream can help soothe a sore nursing nipple.

Is Diaper Balm safe to use on nipples?

Diaper Balm contains anti-fungal herbs, Oregon grape root, and myrrh gum. It is a great product to use on your baby's bottom between diaper changes. If you are looking for a product to use on your nipples, we recommend our Nipple Cream.

Why did you change the name of your Diaper Rash and Thrush?

Motherlove is committed to following FDA guidelines and as such, we preemptively removed the word 'thrush' from our labels. Rest assured, the ingredients remain the same and many moms have found it useful on yeast-driven irritations.

Is Diaper Balm safe to use with cloth diapers?

Yes, Diaper Balm does not contain petroleum or zinc oxide, both common ingredients in diaper rash creams. These ingredients create a moisture barrier that can cause cloth diapers to not be as absorbent. By not using these ingredients, our Diaper Balm is cloth diaper safe.

What is the difference between Pregnant Belly Oil and Pregnant Belly Salve?

Both of these products have a base of apricot oil and are infused with marshmallow root, rosehips, lavender flower, chamomile flower, and calendula flower to help prevent stretch marks and soothe growing, itchy skin. The Pregnant Belly Salve has the addition of shea butter and beeswax, which gives it a thicker consistency. We find that the salve is more popular, but both are equally effective.

Does Pregnant Belly Salve or Pregnant Belly Oil work on existing stretch marks?

Although moisturizing can help stretch marks fade, it is very difficult to get rid of stretch marks completely. We recommend using our Pregnant Belly Oil or Pregnant Belly Salve to help prevent new marks by keeping your skin supple while you grow.

How often should I use Pregnant Belly Salve or Pregnant Belly Oil?

We recommend using it in the morning and the evening, or really, anytime your skin feels tight and itchy. Keep in mind that your belly isn't the only thing growing in pregnancy so we recommend using the oil or salve on anything that is growing such as your belly, hips, breasts, and butt. They all can get stretch marks too!

Any oil-based product has the potential to stain clothing, so we recommend letting the oil or salve absorb before getting dressed.

Is there a risk of botulism in your beeswax?

Motherlove uses beeswax as a thickening agent in a number of our body care products, such as Diaper Balm and Nipple Cream. Unlike honey, which carries a risk for botulism, there is no known risk of botulism in beeswax.

What is a sitz bath?

This is a shallow bath that new moms take in what is known as a sitz bath pan, which is a basin that fits over your toilet seat. This allows women to sit in comforting herbs and warm water after childbirth, helping to soothe sore perineal muscles and ease discomfort.

Motherlove makes a Sitz Bath Soak, which is a pre-steeped blend of herbs to add to the warm water. Additionally, we take these same soothing ingredients and make our Sitz Bath Spray, which can be sprayed directly onto the skin or onto a maxi pad.

What is the difference between Sitz Bath Soak and Sitz Bath Spray?

Both of our sitz bath products contain the same soothing herbs. We offer a Sitz Bath Soak, where one ounce of these pre-steeped herbs can be added directly to a half gallon of warm water. We also make a convenient Sitz Bath Spray, which women can spray directly onto their skin, with no need to stop and sit in a bath. Perfect for frequent use!

Can I use Green Salve on an open wound?

We do not recommend using Green Salve on open wounds or broken skin as it contains comfrey. Once the wound has full closed, it is safe to put Green Salve on it.

What kind of product testing is done on your body care products?

All of our body care products go through microbiological testing and each batch is signed off on by our Quality Assurance Department before leaving our facility.

Does Nipple Cream need to be removed prior to breastfeeding?

Nipple Cream is made from 5 USDA Certified Organic ingredients and it does not need to be removed prior to breastfeeding.

How long of a shelf life do your supplements have?

Our supplements have a shelf life of 5 years and the expiration date can be found on the underside of the bottle. We recommend storing them out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures for best results.

How long of a shelf life do your body care products have?

The shelf life of our body care products varies between 18-22 months, depending on the product. You will find an expiration date located on the bottom of the jar and box.
