Blessed Thistle | Cnicus benedictus
Blessed thistle has been known to be an advantageous herbal galactagogue, an herb/product known to support breast milk supply, as well as a digestive bitter. What makes blessed thistle an incredible herb is that it can not only promote milk supply for new mothers, but it can support skin health and a high-functioning digestive system.
Why You Might Find it Helpful: Studies conducted have identified blessed thistle and as a natural galactagogue. It should be noted that there have not been enough high-quality clinical trials to understand how useful blessed thistle is for lactation purposes fully.
Motherlove uses blessed thistle specifically for our lactation support products, such as our More Milk Plus product line and our More Milk Special Blend product line.
What It Looks Like: Blessed thistle has fuzzy leaves and stems with small yellow flowers. The thistle is specifically noticeable by its pink-colored spines that form a protective barrier around its flower. Blessed thistle is usually harvested for its flowering blossoms, leaves, and stems.
Things to Know: Though blessed thistle has been recognized to aid in lactation, it is not to be used while you are pregnant (postpartum use only). You should also use caution taking this herb if you are sensitive to stomach irritation from gastrointestinal diseases, such as Crohn’s Disease.
